Good news only makes sense against bad news. Scripture is clear that every person has fallen short of God's standard:
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" Romans 3:23
And sin carries a consequence:
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
Left there, we'd have no hope. But God did not leave us there.
The heart of the gospel is summarized in one of the earliest Christian creeds:
"Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures." 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
The motive was love:
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
And His resurrection sealed the victory:
"Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification." Romans 4:25
Four reasons this gospel is worth calling good.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith... not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8–9
"...the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." 1 John 1:7
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus." Romans 8:1
"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God." 1 John 3:1
The gospel asks for faith, not performance:
"I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6
Faith is joined with repentance:
"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out." Acts 3:19
And it marks a new beginning:
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17
The gospel isn't only escape from judgment — it's an invitation into life with God Himself:
"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10
Scripture presents this as a decision not to be delayed:
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved." Acts 16:31
In the end, the gospel is simple: Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again, so that all who believe in Him are forgiven, reconciled to God, and given everlasting life — a gift, not a reward.
"Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift." 2 Corinthians 9:15
